Kicking off with the entry-level sDrive20i, a petrol-engined rear-drive model, the range also encompasses two all-wheel drive diesels – the xDrive20d and xDrive30d. The petrol variant - the xDrive30i - sees fuel use climb to a claimed/combined 7.6L/100km, with emissions a claimed 174g/km. All very minor glitches in an otherwise very impressive package…. Luxuriously leather/cloth seating and dash coverings combine with lustrous 'Poplar Grain Grey' wood trim, piano black fascia, tasteful 'Pearl Chrome' highlights and LED mood lighting to create a sublime interior, capped off – literally in this vehicle's case – by the expansive panoramic sunroof. It’s a beautiful high-resolution display and also can be fitted with the gesture controls found on the 7-Series. They'll be joined by the smallest petrol model, the xDrive20i, and the go-fast and enticing-sounding M40i version, both of which will touch down next year.

It's not infallible, of course, and will only work consistently when there's clear road markings, but it's a very handy safety net.

On the M40i, a 12.3-inch screen replaces the standard gauges. No worries. Stepping up to the 30i or 30d adds Driving Assistant Plus, which includes Active Cruise Control with AEB, cross-traffic warning and steering and lane assistants that form part of BMW’s autonomous package (the same that appears on the 5 series), and that will allow you - in the right conditions - to take your hands off the wheel for spells of 40 seconds.
The design, penned by Aussie Calvin Luk, may be typically understated and evolutionary – though in the metal it's better-proportioned, tauter and more aggressive than ever – but this new US-made X3 is exactly that. Two packages add more safety technology to either X3.
